The best way to move short distances in Rotterdam is using the public transport (bus, metro or tram). The Rotterdam public transport system is divided in different zones with the centre of Rotterdam considered like one zone.

The tickets last for a specific number of zones and a period of time. During this period of time you can use tram, metro and/or bus alternatively. When using the underground, the ticket must be acquired in the Central station or from one of the machines in all stations. On the bus or the tram the tickets can be acquired through the driver.

Another ticket is called strippenkart, these ones can be used multiple times and some of them for the whole month. Strippenkarts can be bought in the Central Station, Beurs, Zuidplein, Capelsebrug and Spijkenisse metro station. They must be validated before taking the metro or inside the trams at the special machines. It is necessary to validate two marks for the zone in which you start and one more for each zone than you cross in the trip. To be in possession of a valued ticket is responsibility of the traveller.

There are two metro lines in Rotterdam; one goes from the Central station to the south of Rotterdam and the other from the east to the west of the city, both lines cross each other in the Beurs station. The metro usually comes every 7 minutes.In the city there are nine tram lines. Their timetables can be seen in the tram stops.

Altogether there are 30 bus lines in the city. Their timetables can be seen in the bus stops. During weekends there is a special night bus service known as the nocturnal line. Since the taxi is expensive, it is a good solution for the long party nights. The price for a bus night ticket is 4 euros, and the tickets can be bought from the driver. There is a company called Water-taxi that crosses from a shore to another of the Maas River in small and fast boats doing the route between the Hotel New York and the wharves of Leuvehaven and Veerhaven. The price by this passage is 2,50 euros. Also there is another company of boats called Maastaxi that picks up and drops off in the region of Rotterdam. The price of these passages varies according to the destination.
