Sint Laurenskerk. The origins of this gothic church are not known but it is thought that it was constructed between 1412 and 1436; it acquired its present form around 1525. The tower was constructed in two phases. The first two began in 1449. A third phase began in 1548. The basilica is of Dutch gothic style with other architectural influences. In its interior there are three marble tombs in memory of maritime heroes Kortenaar, Go Brakel and Witte de With, who fought against the English from 1650 to 1688. Also there are three organs constructed by the Danish Marcussen, which makes it the greatest mechanical organ in Europe. Adjacent to it is the statue of Desiderius Erasmus. |
