BRIDGES

Maastunnel. This tunnel is 1859 meters long and is formed in two sections. Each section has two lines for auto traffic, two bicycle paths and one path for pedestrians. In 1931 it was decided to create a tunnel. This tunnel is a design of architect J.P. van Bruggen with the assistance of A. van der Steur. In the ceiling of the elevator, Gidding inserted mosaics referring to the function and position of the tunnels. During the German occupation; the Germans were in charge of the works. However the Dutch had a secret opening ceremony, so they didn’t give the Germans the honour of the inauguration. |

Brienenoordbrug. Across this bridge, inaugurated in 1990, passes all the heavy traffic. The bridge together with the Benelux Tunnel, are the main connections in the framework of freeways around Rotterdam. Its length is 1.3 kilometres and the opening of arc between its pillars is of 287.5 meters which makes it one the bigger bridges in the country. The traffic jams caused on this bridge are subject of conversation between the inhabitants the city. |

Koninginnenbrug. This bridge connects the Noordereiland and the Kop van Zuid districts. This bridge has a secondary appearance due to its proximity with the bridges De Hef and Willemsbrug. The bridge has two small houses, one in each end. |

Spanjaardsbrug. The Spanjaardsbrug separates the wharves of Oudehaven and Harigvlite since 1597. The actual bridge which was restaured and open to the public in 1984 still has the same hidraulic system that it had in 1885. |
