BRIDGES

Erasmusbrug
Erasmusbrug. This bridge is considered the most elegant bridge of Holland. It was designed by the architect Ben van Berkel and opened in September of 1996. It was nicknamed ' The Swan' long before being completed due to its similarity with this bird. It is a suspension bridge and its pillar has a height of 139 meters and its construction cost about 181 million euros. Immediately it gained the heart of the citizens of Rotterdam and became the symbol of the city. The bridge can be opened and closed in two minutes, and is the biggest bridge of the world of this type. The famous Rotterdam Marathon has crossed it since 1997.

De Hef
De Hef. Designed by P.Joosting and constructed in 1927, this bridge with its two elevator-towers was part of the railroad bridge on the Maas River. It has been conserved as a monument and symbol of the time of prosperity that Rotterdam had in the past. Since the construction of the new railway tunnel below the Maas River, it is not operating any longer. At the moment the bridge is constantly opened so that the ships can pass underneath. At nights it remains illuminated.

Willemsbrug
Willemsbrug. The original bridge was constructed in 1878 to connect the city with the growing area south of the river. It was repaired later on, and its present form was designed by C. Veerling in 1981. It is suspended between two immense red pillars each of them with a height of more than 47 meters. Parallel to the bridge, and few meters bellow the river passes the new railway line. Before the construction of the Erasmus Bridge, Willemsbrug was the only crossing point between the North and South shore of the Maas River.

Regentssebrug
Regentessebrug. This small bridge, inaugurated by the dutch Queen Wilhelmina and her mother Emma, was designed by D.G.Logemann in 1899 imitating the Parisian bridges. It survived the bombings of World War II. It’s built in the Beaus Arts style incorporating natural sand, statues and lamps, which gives it the aspect of a monument.
